In this concise book, Greg Gilbert answers the question “what is the gospel?”, and walks through the truths of the gospel, as explained by Scripture. Christians often have fragmented views of what the gospel is, that is, they don’t see the complete picture of the gospel. While most Christians, if asked, could tell you part of the gospel, they are likely to present an incomplete picture. The gospel is so much larger than so many Christians make it out to be, yet, at the same time, it is so simple! What is the Gospel? is a clear presentation of the gospel that answers many questions that a non-believer or a new believer may have. While it is pertinent that we seek our own answers to the question “what is the gospel?” through the pages of Scripture, this is a great secondary resource, that I would recommend highly to a new or non believer who want to learn more about the truth of the good news that Christians proclaim.
This book is a short and easy read; but I recommend savoring it and really celebrating the goodness of the gospel: we are sinners, but God has sovereignly adopted us as children and heirs with Christ. Christ came to earth and lived a perfect, sinless life then died a cruel, painful death on the cross and endured separation from God the Father, as a substitutionary act on my behalf, and on yours – not because of anything He had done, but because of all of the sin we had yet to commit. On the third day, Jesus Christ rose from the grave and is now reigning in heaven at the Father’s side, interceding with the Father on our behalf – hallelujah!! What a great Savior we have!
